You are called a « digital artist », waht does it mean exactly ? digital artist refers to artist that uses digital medium. I claim myself as a digital drifter. I am at the moment, no home, no earthly address. I functions with a powerbook and digital cameras (video and still) I am totally mobile and i live whereever my new assignments/projects are... so, at the moment, i basically live in tokyo to make an installation project. but i will also live in paris for one month in march to make a short movie trailer. Is there a connection between your work and your movies ? i am always developing new concepts for my art work. i want to make two scifi porn- one was IKU, the other will be FLUID. FLUID is in development with lars von Trier's Zentropa/sextropa company. my art work and movies do cut across each other... right now, my art work is net-link installation..and my movies would also have cyber, scifi fantasia feel to it. Can you tell us a little bit about your first movie FRESH KILL ? What was the purpose of FRESH KILL ? I didn't see FRESH KILL but it looks strange in its look. Fresh kill is distributed by Strand Releasing in LA. www.strandrel.com from the website, i give you this synopsis and i attach a poster jpg for you. FRESH KILL tells the story of two young lesbian parents (Sarita Choudhury of MISSIPPI MASALA) and Erin McMurtry get caught up in a global exchange if industrial waste via contaminated sushi. The place is New York and the time is now. Raw fish lips are the rage on trendy menus across Manhattan. A ghost barge, bearing nuclear refuse, circles the planet in search of a willing port. Household pets start to glow ominously and then disappear altogether. The sky opens up and snows soap flakes. People start speaking in tongues. The crisis escalates when a multinational corporation is implicated and the couple's infant daughter mysteriously vanishes. After uncovering censored information, a group of young New Yorkers makes an unlikely alliance with activists in the developing world and strikes back. Fresh kill is very much a new york film of the 90s. I have lived in New York for 20-some years.. I am quite involved with media activism (through the 80s), performance art scene and cultural diversity in New York. I have also called FRESH KILL, an eco-cybernoia film. It takes on the critique of global recycle of information and toxic waste. It anticipates cyber hactivism on multinational corporations. What was you experience on film making before FRESH KILL ? i am part of new york scene. late 70s, 80s' drug and sex culture. also street activism- AIDS, gulf war, media critique. I was part of two video TV collectives- Paper Tiger TV and Deep Dish TV. Why did you make a porno movie (IKU) after FRESH KILL ? After Fresh Kill, i made a series of net-link installations with major museums..Then, i felt like to have a break from major institutions. I was offered the opportunity to make the porn by Uplink Co.'s Asai Takashi... we went from wanting to make a porn, quick and dirty to a high concept scifi porn. IKU at the end is full of concept on sex in the cyber technology era. Why did you take BLADE RUNNER as a start point for IKU ? My
producer Asai suggested Blade Runner as his favorite scifi movie.
There's lots of Tokyo references in Blade Runner. I came out
with the take off from the elevator scene at the end of the
director's cut of blade runner. I think in blade runner, the
sexual tension between rachel(sean young) and deckard (harrison
ford) are never resolved. I want to use that as a take up point..
thus the script is developed along the line of consuming sex
and the corporate control of the replicants.. thus Genom Corporation
replaces Tyrell Corporation. Did you work with the video format
on IKU for budgetary reason ? part of it.. but we also aim at
exploring digital techology. we want to find a new look with
digital camera. What do you think is the difference between occidental porno movies and the japanese ones ? The japanses want to have narrative. motivation with their sex.. Fetish on every level- the foot, the high school underwear, the housewife. the office lady.... the occidental porn is masturbation tool kit. sequences timed for money shots. Do you think it is right to make a link between the Michal Ninn's movies and IKU ? Michal's film seems to work on video art and fetish genre. I can understand how people want to make the comparison. but IKU is post video, post computer. IKU claims body as harddrive..we have taken over or are taken by technology. you don't really see any computer or monitors in this film. What is the purpose of IKU ? IKU is fusion sex. genre and gender bending. it does not pretend to fit into a set rules. it refuses to be confined into a category. so, it is quite challenging for the audience. we do find that the cyber generation can accept this film prefectly. Are you still working on FLUID, a danish science fiction movie ? yes, in development with Zentropa/Sextropa. I have a producer there who i am working with now. there would still be fundraising and scripting involved... we hope it will be an international production for year 2002. What is your work on it ?
